Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (DEI). PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering (2014), MSc in Electrical and Computer Engineering (2003), and BSc in Electrical Engineering – Systems and Communications (1999). Lecturer at ISEL since 1999; between 1999 and 2025 served in DEETC, and since 2025 has been serving in DEI.

Coordinator of the Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Engineering (LEIC) at DEI since June 2018. Coordinator of the LEIC Project disciplinary group since December 2021. Since 2024, member of the ISEL team responsible for creating the Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science and Data Economics , a partnership between ISEL and ISCAL.

His main research interests include artificial intelligence, machine learning, biometrics, bioinformatics, digital signal processing, pattern recognition, feature selection, and feature discretization. Integrated researcher at the Centre for Mechanical Engineering (CPM) of IDMEC/LAETA, at Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon. External collaborator at the Institute of Telecommunications – Lisbon branch, at Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon.

Member of the Editorial Board of Elsevier’s Applied Soft Computing Journal from 2017 to 2025. Currently a member of the Scientific Committee of six international conferences (ASPAI, DATA, EXPLAINS, ICPRAM, ICAART, and NCTA) and of the Editorial Board of four international journals (MDPI Applied Sciences, MDPI Information, MDPI Journal of Imaging, and MDPI Algorithms).

Proceedings editor of conferences on four occasions and editor/co-editor/guest editor of international journals on seven occasions. Author/co-author of around 100 peer-reviewed publications, including book chapters, articles in international journals, and papers in international and national conference proceedings.

Since 2002, he has supervised approximately 80 undergraduate final projects and 31 master’s theses.

Member of COST Action CA22137 – Randomised Optimisation Algorithms Research Network (ROAR-NET). Member of the Portuguese Association for Pattern Recognition (APRP) and the Portuguese Order of Engineers (OE).
