A student completing this course unit should be able to:

1. Define compression;
2. Understand the important issues in data compression;
3. Understand the idea of lossless and lossy compression;
4. Distinguish the basic techniques of lossless compression;
5. Understand the most common file formats for image, sound and video;
6. Understand the conceptual basis for commonly used compression techniques and understand how to use and evaluate several readily available implementations of those techniques.
