The "Lusa Yearbook 2024" exhibition was inaugurated on April 29th, in the main hall of ISEL, a photographic exhibition that brings together some of the most memorable moments of the last year, captured by the lenses of photojournalists from Agência Lusa. This is the second time that ISEL has hosted the exhibition, reinforcing the connection between the institution and the world of journalism and visual communication.
The opening session was attended by the President of ISEL, Professor José Nascimento, who welcomed the guests and thanked Lusa for its continued collaboration. In his speech, he referred to the agency as a “communication vehicle synonymous with credibility”, highlighting the importance of quality journalism in a context of great fluidity and information overload.
The event also included a round table moderated by António Teófilo, promoter of the World Action ISEL group, a group dedicated to promoting active citizenship and critical reflection at ISEL. The conversation brought together prominent professionals from Agência Lusa: Joaquim Carreira, Chairman of the Board of Directors; Maria de Deus Rodrigues, Deputy Director of Information; Paulo Carriço, Multimedia editor; José Sena Goulão, photojournalist; and Sofia Cadete and Inês Cordeiro, from the Commercial and Marketing Department.
During the session, Joaquim Carreira highlighted the increasingly relevant role of information verification in the current media landscape. “We are trying to show, beyond what is more or less known, what our work is — that is our objective with the yearbook and our presence here,” he said, adding that it is also a way of “stopping a little between what is digital and what is physical.” He also called for critical reflection: “The world today is in a hurry and has little patience. What I ask is: read the book, stop and think about the quality of journalism in practice. The news on the website soon disappears. Reading the book forces us to remember.”
In an audience made up of students, teachers and non-teaching staff, the panel reflected on the challenges of contemporary journalism, the power of the image and Lusa's mission as a national news agency. There was space for questions and for guests to share personal experiences, in an environment marked by closeness and open dialogue.
The exhibition represents not only a tribute to the work of Lusa professionals, but also an opportunity for the ISEL community to reflect on the role of journalism in building collective memory and informed citizenship.
The exhibition will be open to the public until May 23, 2025.
