Intended learning outcomes

Upon completion of this curricular unit, the students will be able to:

  • Use of computer tools to manipulate multimedia content, data analysis, and visualization.
  • Identify data required for disaster risk assessment and management, such as remote sensing data, digital elevation data, thematic data, and historical disaster data.
  • Understand how risk information can be used for selecting appropriate disaster risk mitigation and for making decisions by considering likely future hazard and risk scenarios.
  • Be aware of the freely available satellite-based resources and products for emergency mapping, mobile apps for reporting disaster incidents.
  • Be aware of the use of robots for search and rescue operations.
  • Understand how digital technology can be used to support post-disaster recovery and building damage assessment.
  • The role of social media namely with notification systems, mobile apps, and social media in preparedness, emergency, and recovery from disaster.
