Prof. Manfred Niehus is Senior Lecturer (Professor Adjunto) in Physics at the Instituto Superior de Engenharia de Lisboa (ISEL) and researcher at the Instituto de Telecomunicações (IT). His research focuses on experimental physics, optical communications, photonics, and quantum technologies, with emphasis on the integration of optical systems, advanced control, and precision measurement infrastructures, including space-related applications.
He obtained his Diplom-Physik degree from the Universität zu Köln in 1998, including an Erasmus period at the Universidade de Lisboa, and completed his PhD in Physics at Instituto Superior Técnico in 2005, specializing in semiconductor physics and optical systems.
At ISEL, he teaches courses in Estimation and Control, Sensors and Actuators, and Optical Technologies and Photonics, promoting interdisciplinary approaches across physics and engineering. His recent research activities include optical ground stations for quantum communications, free-space optical links, and quantum communication infrastructures within projects such as PTQCI and QuantSatPT. He also regularly serves as expert evaluator for national and European R&D programmes in the fields of space systems, optical communications, and quantum technologies.
