Patrícia D. Barata graduated in Industrial Chemical Engineering from Instituto Superior de Engenharia de Lisboa. She obtained her M.Sc. in Technological Organic Chemistry and her Ph.D. in Sustainable Chemistry from the Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia of Universidade Nova de Lisboa.
She is an Adjunct Professor in the Organic and Inorganic Chemistry Section of the Chemical Engineering Department, where she teaches Organic Chemistry and Green Chemistry. She also collaborates with the Escola Superior de Saúde de Lisboa in the field of Orthotics. She has participated as a trainer in the Chemical Analysts Training Course within Project 9ºW from Hovione.
She is currently an advisor to the ISEL Presidency for Sustainability and Innovation. She coordinates the ISEL Eco-Schools and Eco-Campus programme, is a member of the ISEL Ethics Committee, an integrated member of the Centro de Química de Vila Real at UTAD, Vice-President of the Centre for Chemical Engineering Studies, and a member of the course council for the degree in Orthotics. She has previously served on the ISEL Editorial Committee and on the Coordinating Commission of the Chemical and Biological Engineering degree programme.
Her research focuses on Supramolecular Chemistry, particularly on calixarene-based systems applied as sensors for explosives, pollutants, biomolecules, and metals. In parallel, she works on the sustainable development of fluorescent carbon nanomaterials (carbon dots) produced from renewable resources, with applications in biology and catalysis.
